But just how did this fan-filled and bar-centric neighborhood get its name, anyway? The stadium was first erected in 1914 and was referred to as Weeghman Park, named after the club's part owner, Charles A. Weeghman. The field became home to the "Cubbies" (as they are called by fans) two years later, but by 1918, Weeghman had moved over and ceded his shares in the Cubs to chewing gum mogul William Wrigley - hence the new name Wrigley Field was derived. After nearly a decade at the helm, William Wrigley saw it fit to expand the seating capacity of the stadium, relocating the grandstand, adding an upper deck, and putting in bleacher seats along right field. Yes, what would we have ever done without the bleacher seats?!

One of the main explanations for the old-timey charm that Wrigley Field evokes is its stubborn resistance to change. When Weeghman leased the property on which the ballpark stands, he saw to it that no renovations should ever exceed $70,000. While that condition has never been obeyed quite exactly, it did set a precedent for the sense of tradition that enables the old stadium to endure. Take, for example, the fact that Wrigley Field was the last Major League stadium in the nation to install lights. Not until 1988, after the team (and their home base) was sold to the Tribune Company, were floodlights incorporated into the stadium design, enabling it to finally host night games. Finally! Even then, the move was strongly resisted by longtime fans. Wrigley Field was not going anywhere.

While summertime in Wrigleyville is an exciting time since droves of fans come to watch America’s favorite pastime, Wrigleyville also has plenty to offer residents year-round. And, since Wrigleyville properties are conveniently served by both the Red Line and a multitude of busses, it is hassle-free to get anywhere in the city.

The Wrigleyville neighborhood has a multitude of dining and entertainment choices as well as a healthy mix of living options. Notwithstanding the intensity of Clark Street, Wrigleyville’s main artery for business and entertainment venues, the tree-lined residential streets surrounding it are markedly peaceful. Along these streets, Wrigleyville Chicago real estate choices include multiunit condominiums, two- and three-flats, low- and mid-rise residential buildings and fantastic, fully restored single-family townhomes and gorgeous Victorian grey stones.

Wrigleyville Neighborhood Highlights

Perhaps one of the most exciting venues in which to witness Major League Baseball, Wrigley Field is home not only to the Chicago Cubs but to an ever-increasing amount of watering holes, restaurants, concerts, ice-skating adventures, and even NHL hockey!

Picture an isolated college town and then stick it right smack in the middle of one of the largest cities on the planet. What is the result? This is none other than the neighborhood of Wrigleyville. From the Captain Morgan Club to Moe's Cantina to Slugger's, the blocks of Clark Street and its neighboring side streets lined with bars rarely experience a dull moment or empty-crowd syndrome.

Fans, suburbians, visitors, and international travelers enjoy the Wrigley scene. Even when the winter months hit, the local Chicagoans engage in their fair share of pub crawls along the famous Clark Street. To name a few popular watering holes:
