John Hancock Condominiums

"The construction of the John Hancock is one of mankind's oldest dreams," so say the members of the World Federation of Great Towers, a distinguished association celebrating the most magnificent of these “international monuments.” Ranging the globe from the Eiffel Tower to the recently added Burj Khalifa in Dubai, 32 structures have been deemed worthy to grace their list. Of these, the U.S. is represented by only three: the Empire State Building, Seattle’s Space Needle and, here in Chicago, the John Hancock Center.
175 East Delaware or “Big John” is a 100-story mixed-use complex offering prime office and retail space, restaurants and observatories, a 750-space heated parking garage, a TV/radio broadcast center, and 49 floors of the most sought-after condominium residences in Chicago. When it was topped off in 1970, it was the world’s tallest building outside New York. Since then it’s been surpassed even in Chicago, yet it still boasts the highest residences in the world—not to mention the highest indoor swimming pool, just off the 44th floor sky lobby.
Should you desire to experience Chicago’s vibrant nightlife, pristine beaches, first-rate shopping or some of its better-known historical landmarks, John Hancock Center condos couldn’t leave you more centrally located. Just two blocks south of Oak Street, the John Hancock is a five minute walk from both Oak St. Beach as well as Oak Street’s prestigious high-fashion shops and boutiques, which are something akin to those of Rodeo Drive. Bloomingdales and Water Tower, an indoor shopping mall with Macy’s attached, are each a two minute walk away. Along with the many shopping options that abound, some of Chicago’s most sought-after restaurants are just steps from your Streeterville condo. The Park Hyat’s NoMI, designated a “Top 10 Power Dining Spot” by Forbes and one of the “World’s Best Hotel Dining Rooms” by Gourmet, Spiaggia, famous for fine dining Italian cuisine, and Ralph Lauren’s RL Restaurant for a more traditional setting are but three of the scores of superb choices at your doorstep.
Historical landmarks within two blocks from the John Hancock include The Drake Hotel, Fourth Presbyterian Church and the old Water Tower, constructed in 1869 and one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire. The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is a Streeterville staple and, located just five minutes south, is yet another indication of the John Hancock’s convenient placement. Notwithstanding its prime location, the John Hancock is well-served by public transportation, including the many buses that run up and down Michigan Avenue as well as the “El” a few blocks west.
John Hancock Building Amenities

Beyond its sheer size, the Hancock is noteworthy for its revolutionary tubular design. Huge, high-density aluminum braces criss-cross the building’s bronze-glass exterior to create a distinctive series of giant black X’s that support the entire structure, producing more open, usable floor space by eliminating the need for interior columns. From the 12-foot waterfall in the elliptical plaza at its foot, a hundred stories up to its enormous white antenna masts above a crown of rectangular lights that change color with the seasons, the Hancock’s traditional, muscular solidity cooled by the sleekness of its modern Miesian style makes it the city’s most recognizable landmark, and probably the most widely-honored example of Chicago architecture in the world.
A quick ride aboard the fast elevators takes you to the 94th floor, where on a clear day the observatory provides a spectacular four-state panorama. One more flight up offers those same views from a romantic, candlelit table in the stylish Art Deco setting of the Signature Room. In addition to its fabulous daily menus, this is the ultimate place to start the week with the most sumptuous Sunday brunch you’ll find anywhere. Or stop off later in the day to shake off your cares in the Signature Lounge at the 96th, while you watch the setting sun glimmer through the lens of a perfect martini.
The Signature Room and Lounge share the Hancock with the Cheesecake Factory and L'Appetito Italian deli at the plaza level, and for a change of pace there are at least twenty other restaurants within walking distance, including favorites like Ditka’s, Spiaggia and the Drake Hotel’s Cape Cod Room. Owners of John Hancock real estate also enjoy access to three floors of retail shops, a grocery store, a full-service post office, newsstand, office supply center, dry cleaners—you get the picture. When you live here you may feel like you never have to leave . . . except for the fact that you’re in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and countless other high-end retailers, specialty stores and chic boutiques surround you, not to mention Water Tower Place, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Oak Street Beach, the Lookingglass Theatre, nightclubs, piano bars, cafés, bistros, taverns and restaurants galore.
When John Hancock stepped forward to become the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, he wrote with such a bold flourish that his very name came to mean a man’s signature. What a perfect namesake for the John Hancock Center, Chicago’s “signature” skyscraper: the pinnacle of sophisticated urban living in this most American of cities. The John Hancock Center brings you the cosmopolitan life—writ large!
