South Shore Real Estate Market

South Shore is a sprawling community located 10 miles south of Chicago's downtown. Bordering Lake Michigan for more than a mile, a walk along the shoreline offers a full spectrum of Chicago's impressive skyline. Also set upon the lakefront is South Shore's prized edifice, the South Shore Cultural Center. Formerly the South Shore Country Club, this Mediterranean-style clubhouse was originally established as a lush retreat for wealthy Chicagoans. Today, this architecturally prominent structure is owned by the Chicago Park District and is open to the public.

South Shore Real Estate

In keeping with the opulence of the South Shore Cultural Center is much of the real estate surrounding it. Between the first and second World Wars, this section of South Shore saw a housing boom. This boom was spawned by a surge of wealthy citizens whose tastes required luxurious cooperative apartments and mansions. Other parts of South Shore boast a variety of unique architectural styles. Jackson Park Highlands, a historic district on South Shore's northern end, is overflowing with some of Chicago's greatest examples of 19th century architecture, including scores of homes in the style of American Four Square and Renaissance and Colonial Revivals, all on suburban-sized lots. A fair number of Jackson Park Highlands homes were also built in the early 20th century by notable architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and his contemporaries. Additionally, Jackson Park Highlands real estate offers a unique mix of homes modeled on examples from around the world, which infuse the neighborhood with an entirely distinct character. The Bryn Mawr section of South Shore is home to the Allen Miller House. Built in 1915 for advertising executive Allen Miller, this home is a superb example of Prairie-style architecture.

South Shore Community Amenities

As plush and stately as South Shore real estate can be, the community offers other amenities enhancing its desirability. Jackson Park is a 500-acre green haven set in the midst of South Shore and bordering Lake Michigan. Redesigned by the architect of New York's Central Park, Jackson Park is filled with lagoons, the lovely Osaka Garden, and the Jackson Park Golf Course. The vast open space provided by Jackson Park combined with the 65-acre lakefront park that is the site of the South Shore Cultural Center offer ample opportunity to be outdoors. Walking paths, public beaches, a bird sanctuary, and movies and music in the park on a summer's eve are added incentives for homebuyers to consider South Shore for their home.
