River North History
Given the expansion of the Chicago railroad system in the 1800s, this Near North Side area experienced a significant amount of activity and became quite the bustling industry hot spot. Deemed the "Smokey Hollow", the area suffered from intense industrial pollution.
The once highly industrialized area then underwent quite a transformation as the years passed. With the events of World War II having a significant impact on all cities, particularly the River North area of Chicago, the manufacturing industry experienced a slump which led to the demise of many factories. What lined the streets of the once-booming industrial downtown neighborhood were vacant warehouses, and alas, the warehouse district was born and then quickly disappeared. By the 1970s, the demand for warehouses decreased, and the abundance of storehouses closed. What became of the ever-changing neighborhood was a bunch of vacant buildings which were no longer serving any purpose.
Things suddenly began to look up as the abandoned buildings sparked the interests of writers, artists, and real estate developers. Empty spaces were converted into beautiful lofts and gallery showrooms. The area was alive again.
Those in search of an upbeat and lively neighborhood shall search no more. Chicago's River North neighborhood is bounded by the Chicago River to the south and west, Michigan Ave. To the east, and Chicago Ave to the north.
