More About the New Eastside

Chicago’s New Eastside may be the perfect location if you like the lakefront and Grant Park or want to walk to work. Located between Grant Park and the Chicago River, Chicago’s New Eastside is bordered by Lake Shore Drive to the East and Michigan Avenue to the west. Previously used as a 9 hole golf course and before that a vast rail yard until the early 1970s, this territory started undergoing major mix-use developments around that same time and continuing through present day. Some of the New Eastside’s most recognizable buildings which helped shape Chicago’s skyline include the 340 Randolph, Harbor Point and the Park Shore. Nearly overshadowing everything however is the nearly completed Lakeshore East master plan originally developed by Magellan Development Company. This 28-acre masterpiece consists of high-rise condominiums, park homes, high-rise apartments, retail shops, a proposed elementary school and an extraordinary 6-acre park centrally located in the middle. Its tallest building, the 87-story apartment complex the Aqua, was just completed in 2009. And just west of the Chicago River is the building location for the controversial 150-story skyscraper, the Chicago Spire. Though construction on this architectural wonder was put on hold in 2009, the construction site still remains today. Because of its past and ongoing development, the New Eastside is quite a remarkable and spectacular location for city-dwellers looking for their next apartment or condo.
