Hyde Park Real Estate

The University of Chicago's campus, reminiscent of Oxford, is the site of many spectacular old stone structures. The grand and sophisticated homes that surround the campus, combined with fantastic old hotels that line Lake Shore Drive, all contribute to the elegance woven throughout the area. Hyde Park real estate has a tremendous amount to offer prospective buyers. Scenic waterfront panoramas, lush green parks, easy access to downtown Chicago via the Metra or CTA busses, a surplus of cultural institutions and exquisite vintage architecture make Hyde Park Chicago real estate desirable to a variety of residents and buyers. Options range from smaller single-family homes to expansive vintage estates. Newer developments and rehabbed homes have also made a recent debut. Charming old buildings that were once hotels line Lake Shore Drive and have since been converted to condominiums. A common thread amongst Hyde Park real estate is that each home and building is unique and, whether they be set on wide tree-lined streets or boast sweeping city and lakeshore vistas, lovely surroundings act to enhance stunning architecture.

Hyde Park Community Amenities

Home to the esteemed University of Chicago, Hyde Park is a South Side neighborhood located 6 miles south of The Loop. Along with the University of Chicago, Hyde Park houses the Oriental Institute, the Renaissance Society, the Museum of Science & Industry, the Hyde Park Art Center, and Frank Lloyd Wright's famed Robie House. Hyde Park also organizes the annual 57th Street Art Fair, Chicago's oldest juried art fair. 57th Street doubles as a venue for several well-known independent bookstores, like Powell's and 57th Street Books, a further indication that Hyde Park is brimming with cultural as well as intellectual opportunities.

Although Hyde Park was initially developed in the 1850's, it was not until the founding of the University of Chicago by John D. Rockefeller in the early 1890's that Hyde Park really put its name on the map. Host to the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, Hyde Park captured the attention of an international community. Converted from Charles Atwood's Palace of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science & Industry is the sole structure remaining of those built for the Exposition. However, the Museum of Science and Industry is but one example of Hyde Park's architectural masterpieces.
