As one of the most popular home designs in the Chicago area even today, you don’t have to look far to find some fantastic options when it comes to bungalows. If you’re interested in purchasing a bungalow, you’ll want to know what makes them so special, and some of the best places to look in the city.

What is a Bungalow-Style Home?

A Chicago bungalow is usually easy to spot. Because these types of homes were built for the working class, they’re almost identical in design. Usually, a bungalow is 1.5-stories and made of brick. In Chicago, most bungalows tend to have a dormered roof, limestone accents and concrete stairs leading up to the front door of the home.

On the inside, a bungalow typically has one side of the home reserved for its bedrooms and a bathroom, while the other side is where you’ll find the kitchen, dining room, and living room. The home probably has a full basement and a street-facing veranda, plus some come with a back porch. The attic of a bungalow is commonly used for storage space. 

Things to Consider Before Buying a Bungalow

If you’re considering buying a bungalow in Chicago, keep in mind this type of home is standard in its layout. The home won’t be large, so it may not work well for a larger family. On the other hand, it could be perfect for a small family, a couple, or a single homeowner. Some bungalows are plainer on the outside and some are more unique but making any changes to the exterior could be dependent on whether the bungalow sits in one of the city’s historic districts. 

With a bungalow, you won’t be in a neighborhood right in Downtown Chicago, but you shouldn’t be too far away, either. For those who want a big more privacy, a small yard and more of a suburban feel, purchasing a Chicago bungalow may be a fantastic decision.

Where You’ll Find Bungalows in Chicago 

In the early 1900s, the City of Chicago was growing quickly and there was a need for more housing, built on the outskirts of town. Many families wanted a yard, but in Chicago a home also had to fit within a standard, narrow city lot. There was also a need for an affordable single-family property. Extremely popular with buyers at the time, Chicago bungalows quickly went up around what we now call some of Chicago’s “Bungalow Belt” neighborhoods.

Despite being around 100 years old today, Chicago bungalows were designed to last. Today, there are several National Register Bungalow Historic Districts in the Chicago area. This includes Gage Park on the southwest side and Hermona on the northwest side. The bungalows in Talman West Ridge were built by dozens of different builders and presented a way for a larger number of families to share in the American dream of owning their own home. Some counts suggest there are at least 80,000 bungalows still standing in the Chicago area today, and these days many of them are still extremely popular with homebuyers.
