New Rental Complex Replacing CarmichaelsFor years, Carmichael’s Steakhouse at 1052 W. Monroe has been a favorite dinner spot for both West Loop residents and local Chicagoans all over the city who appreciate a good old-fashioned steak dinner. The structure itself was originally built back in 1947, but it wasn’t until 1997 that Mel Bechina, also the owner of Carmichael Truck Repair, opened up what’s been considered a neighborhood staple for nearly the past 20 years.

All that, however, is about to change as reports are starting to surface about the building and surrounding property being sold and plans for a new 131 rental complex taking its place. The developer, Michigan Avenue Realty Group, plans to raze Carmichael’s and construct two 4-story buildings—one housing 57 new rentals and the

Brass Monkey Fulton MarketMore development news for the Fulton Market part of downtown and this time we’re learning about plans for a new restaurant, microdistillery, and event space all at one location. Crain’s first reported that 401 N. Morgan, the address of the new restaurant/distillery combo, which will be called Brass Monkey, was purchased by real estate developer and restaurateur Marc Bushala back in mid-January of this year, but back then, the plans were still somewhat unknown.

Around the time when the news originally broke that 401 N. Morgan had been purchased by Bushala, the plan was to always include space for a 5,000 square foot restaurant and a 20,0000 square-foot event space; but now there seems to bit just a little bit more information available. The Brass Monkey

West Loop Park Over the Expressway

Chicago’s hottest restaurant scene? Check. All the best loft buildings? Check. Google? Check. If you think the West Loop has reached its peak and there’s nothing left that could make this part of downtown Chicago even more desirable and trendy, you obviously haven’t heard the latest development plan which involves building a 3-block suspended park over the busy, heavily traveled Kennedy expressway.

The unique park space being discussed could be a joint effort between two local development firms, SMDP Studio and Fifield Companies, which is proposed to be an 8-12 acre space between Washington Boulevard and Adams Street in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood.

The idea behind the park is to attract even more development to the area, specifically on

Earlier in the month Crain’s Chicago Business reported that four boutique-style hotels may be coming to the Fulton-Market-Randolph area and you can bet an array of retail shops, restaurants, and cafés will soon follow should everything go according to plan. Currently, there are just a few very desirable condo buildings with standing inventory anywhere near Chicago's new Google location—which include the lofts at 312 N. May and 1044 W. Fulton—but as development progresses and Google finally makes the

601 W. Jackson Chicago IL West LoopMore good news for Chicago’s West Loop came via The Chicago Architecture Blog earlier this week with the announcement that a proposed 15-story, 198-unit apartment building at 601 W. Jackson has no objections from West Loop residents and surrounding neighbors. As mentioned in the blog, it isn’t uncommon for area locals to fuss about a potential new development coming to the neighborhood, as issues such as parking, congestion, blocked views, and diminishing park space often become worrisome to those living nearby. But in the case of 601 West Jackson however, everything planned seems to be well received by everyone involved with the project or residing near the site.

Currently, a surface parking lot sits at the corner of Jackson and Jefferson with

And yesterday, it was in fact confirmed that the mega internet company will soon be migrating west to 1000 W. Fulton Street.

The building, which is being dubbed 1kFulton, was once the site of a huge cold storage facility but is currently in the process of being redeveloped into fabulous new loft-like office space. According to Crain’s most recent report, Google has inked in a lease that gives them a whopping 200,000 square feet of usable space, with the ability to add more space if needed—something they’re currently lacking at the current
