The Show Won't Go On...

...But Esquire Theatre Structure Here to Stay

A unique and very desirable plan has been released for the once prominent Esquire Theatre located at 58 East Oak Street in Chicago’s Gold Coast—FINALLY! And no, these plans don’t coincide with previous proposals of a residential tower, boutique hotel, combining commercial real estate options with an upscale hotel establishment, or even the most recent approval of total demolishment. Instead, renderings released from Alderman Reilly’s office show a modern renovation to the existing theatre structure which will essentially be transformed into five small levels of retail space and reviving a very popular form of entertainment within the Gold Coast boundaries--shopping. More importantly, however, the theatre’s vertical “ESQUIRE” sign will be salvaged and implemented into the new design, ultimately saving a piece of treasured neighborhood history. In all, the new Esquire plans call for seven separate retail spaces-five boutique-style spaces on the first floor and one larger space on each of the sixth and seventh floors-which will total over 30,000 square feet of fabulous shopping options. Construction could begin as early as fall 2011 with new stores opening doors in time for the holiday season of 2012.
