One of Chicago's best Neighborhoods
Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood.
What began as basically a landfill created by debris left over from the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, has become one of the most glamorous and desirable neighborhoods in the world.
Streeterville is the area of downtown Chicago that begins where Lake Michigan meets the Chicago River. It extends north to East Lake Shore Drive and Oak Street Beach. It is bordered on the east by Lake Michigan; on the west by that Magnificent Mile, Michigan Avenue.
Streeterville has been home to some of the city’s most well-known individuals. Oprah Winfrey purchased a home on East Lake Shore Drive. A former Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Stock Exchange lived on East Delaware, near the John Hancock Building. The neighborhood is also home to newscasters, politicians (both current and retired), physicians, attorneys, students, nurses, entrepreneurs, bankers, realtors and office workers. Just about anyone could feel at home in Streeterville.
Real estate prices here can accommodate most any budget. The lowest-priced Streeterville condo currently on the market is listed at $135,000. It’s a studio tucked away on East Delaware near the lakefront. All-neutral carpet and walls. G-r-e-a-t location in a very well-maintained building. And the price for the neighborhood is a real “wow.” As a matter of fact, there are currently 84 condos priced at less than $250,000 in Streeterville. Why not buy two?!
At the top end of current Streeterville listings is an ultra-lavish 3-BR/3.5-BA space priced at $6,250,000 in the uber-luxurious Palmolive condominium (still referred to by locals as the former Playboy Building).
It’s just as much fun to play in Streeterville as it is to work. There’s an entire stretch of sand to the east known as the shoreline of Lake Michigan. There are bike trails, volleyball courts and outdoor summer dining at the Beachstro. Navy Pier treats residents to fireworks every Saturday night and sometimes on Wednesdays. Shopaholics can get their shopping on with a trip down the Magnificent Mile. Gastronomes will enjoy Italian cuisine at Volare (best tiramisu outside of New York City, according to one well-traveled dining enthusiast). The Capital Grille is great for carnivores. D4 offers a stick-to-your-ribs Irish menu. Tru is a neighborhood mainstay with some of the best French cuisine anywhere.
