Fun Facts About Chicago - Part 2

Not long ago, we featured a great list detailing just some of Chicago's many fun facts. Without boring you with another 2 paragraph introduction, we'll just get right to part 2 of this on-going series. Enjoy. 

  • The Field Museum, located at 1400 S Lake Shore Drive, has over 19,430,000 biological specimens.

  • Skyscrapers weren't the only thing Chicago started. Roller skates, elevated railways, cracker jacks, zippers, window envelopes, Hostess Twinkies, pinball games and spray paint were also invented in Chicago.

  • Chicago is home to the Chicago Water Tower and Pumping Station, the only buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire. Taking place in October 1871 and known as "The Great Fire," this disaster destroyed one-third of Chicago at that time and left more than 100,000 homeless.

  • Movies filmed in Chicago include I-Robot, Chicago, Untouchables, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Blues Brothers, The Negotiator, The Fugitive, What Woman Want, American Beauty, Stir of Echoes, Road to Perdition, Chain Reaction, When Harry Met Sally, Sixteen Candles, Ocean’s 11 & 12, Home Alone- I, II & III, Barbershop, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Bad Boys, A League of Their Own, Transformers, The Dark Knight, Backdraft, High Fidelity, Public Enemies, and several movies starring Vince Vaughn (these are mostly all the same, so we left it at that).

  • Chicago also has the only river in the world that flow backwards. Engineers reversed the Chicago River in 1900 for sanitary purposes

  • The Chicago River is dyed green on Saint Patrick's Day. If you didn't know this, watch The Fugitive-it's a classic.
