Chicago's Best Neighborhoods With Greystones

Chicago Neighborhoods With Greystones

Greystones are an architectural treasure unique to the Chicago area. The elegant, timeless buildings, which are made from Bedford limestone, date back as far as the 1890s and continued to be erected until the 1930s. While some greystones of today may be single-family homes, they were typically constructed to house two to four units and there are said to be as many 30,000 of these gorgeous residential buildings throughout the city. While you are likely to see greystones sprinkled throughout every neighborhood, there are some Chicago neighborhoods in particular that are known for being home to stunning greystones. Next time you stroll through these neighborhoods, be on the lookout for these Neoclassical and Romanesque architectural works of art that are more than a century old.

Logan Square

With tree-lined streets and countless local bars and restaurants, Logan Square is a lively residential neighborhood that has a rich artistic energy all its own. Logan Square is known not only for its effortless urban vibe, but for its stunning architecture, which features quite a few of Chicago’s stately greystones. Logan Square greystone homes feature four or five bedrooms and vary in size, with some as large as 4,250 square feet, and while some have recognizably modern upgrades to the facades, others look as if they’ve been preserved in their original form entirely. A profoundly desirable neighborhood, Logan Square has homes priced higher than many other areas in the city, with single-family greystones priced between $1M and $2M.

Situated not far from Lake Michigan on the North Side of Chicago lies the neighborhood of Lakeview. Lakeview is perhaps best known for its flourishing arts scene, providing a home to theater troupes, dance groups, and comedians in addition to the absolutely breathtaking views it offers residents and guests overlooking the water. Greystones are a hallmark of the Lakeview neighborhood, and a stroll down its streets will reveal some of the most architecturally sophisticated greystones in all of Chicago, not to mention some of the most expansive. Greystones in Lakeview span a fairly wide range of sizes, with some just over 2,500 and others approaching 8,000 square feet. The neighborhood’s greystones are priced between the low $700s and more than $2.2M.

The neighborhood’s greystones feature four and five bedrooms and vary in size between 4,000 square feet and nearly 6,500 square feet. Only blocks from the water’s edge, the Gold Coast’s greystones are some of the most prized real estate in all of the city, and they are priced as such, falling in the mid $2M.

Known as Chicago’s hub for African American life and arts, Bronzeville is revered for its rich history and thriving cultural scene. The community is chock full of historic landmarks, events, festivals, and galleries, like the annual Bud Billiken Parade, which is the largest African American parade in the country. With a reputation for producing some of Chicago’s best local craft beers, Ravenswood is one of the most underrated neighborhoods in all of Chicago. While Ravenswood is home to a multitude of warehouse and loft-style buildings, there are also quite a few greystones sprinkled throughout the community. Greystones in Ravenswood reflect the immaculate attention to detail characteristic of the late 19th century, and many look completely untouched since the time of their construction. These grand homes vary in size between 3,500 and 5,000 square feet and are typically priced between $1M and $2M.
