Gold Coast Combines Rich History with Fine Dining & Upbeat Nightlife

Gold Coast & Rush Street Chicago

Rush Street is a brief thoroughfare with a long history in Chicago. Once a well-trod Indian trail leading all the way to Green Bay, it was named in honor of the patriot Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration—a fitting pedigree to be part of Chicago’s Gold Coast.  Yet to most, Rush Street is less about what happened then what’s happenin’! Ever since the sixties it’s been the destination for Chicago nightlife—Party Central for dining, dancing and carousing till the sun peeks up over the lake.  While maturing over time, its tastes growing more refined and debonair (just like those of you who may have sown your wild oats here!) the irresistible energy of Rush Street still sparks the social swirl of the city.

Rush Street Dining

The party-heart of Rush Street is still beatin’—and till 5AM on Saturdays at Division Street nightclubs like the Original Mother’s and She-nannigans.  But if clubbing is just for the kids, then you’ll be just as delighted to find a far more sophisticated night on the town awaiting you here.

For fine dining, some of America’s most celebrated steakhouses grace this neighborhood.  Whether it’s Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse (1028 N. Rush) with its upscale family feel or the more exclusive ambiance of Morton’s, The Steakhouse (1050 N. State), for unforgettably indulgent dining you can’t go wrong with either of these Rush Street stalwarts.  Another favorite is Carmine's (1043 N. Rush), a dual-level eatery with live music and a mouth-watering menu of Italian dishes, like their hand-rolled “eight-finger” cavatelli, a pasta you can’t refuse.  You’ll find more multi-level seating at Tavern On Rush (1031 N. Rush), where the night stays lively between the huge horseshoe bar and the bustling, open kitchen, with thick steaks sizzling on the grill.

Thirsty?  That won’t last long on Rush Street.  Savor a single malt on a brisk winter night  at The Whiskey Bar & Grill (1015 N. Rush) or linger at their summer sidewalk café with the refreshing Salad Niçoise and a sauvignon blanc, lightly chilled.  Next to the stylish James Hotel there’s an intimate booth for you and a close friend at J Bar (610 N. Rush), a sleekly elegant lounge with an eye for intriguing entertainments, from Euro house DJ’s to innovative art installations.  Too au courant?  Then go retro at Jilly’s (1007 N. Rush), a classic watering hole where swingin’ Frank Sinatra still reigns in spirit and on the sound system.

Ten sets of French door windows provide a classy view of Rush Street’s nightlife sauntering by at the always diverting P.S. Chicago (1009-1011 N. Rush). Offering a more casual take on the nightclub scene, this celebrity-sighting hotspot describes itself as “several parties combined into one.”  Come to think of it, that’s a good way to describe all of Rush Street—a non-stop celebration where everyone can find a place for themselves, either to unwind in an elegant setting, or to stay up late and party down!
