Chicago's Top 5 Music Festivals in 2012

Everyone loves summertime in Chicago. I often hear remarks by people living in the city such as “Chicago is a totally different city in the summer” or “there’s nothing better than summertime in Chicago!” But what makes Chicago so great during these 4 months out of the year? Is it the one-of-a-kind beaches lining Chicago’s lakefront? Perhaps it’s the countless summer festivals many of the downtown neighborhoods host each year. Or what about the long list of concerts put on at Soldier Field, Wrigley Field, the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, and the numerous other outdoor venues scattered throughout our city?

Well for me, as a huge music fan, it is in fact all of the fabulous musical performances Chicagoans get the opportunity to experience that makes downtown Chicago a truly special place during the warm weather months each and every year. So with summer just around the corner, I thought I’d countdown the Top 5 Concerts in Chicago that all music lovers should check out in the summer of 2012:

5)   Chicago Blues Festival

2012 marks the 29th year for the Chicago Blues Festival, with Grammy winner Mavis Staples headlining this year’s event. Happening June 8th through the 10th, the Chicago Blues Fest celebrates past, present, and future Blues icons, as well as the genre as a whole. Other Blues artists this year will also include Texas Johnny Brown and Floyd Taylor. Be sure to check it out for FREE at Grant Park later this year!

4)   The Grant Park Music Festival

Taking place from June 13th through August 18th is the nation’s only FREE outdoor classical music series, which is performed by the Grant Park Orchestra, a local Chicago favorite. All performances will be at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park and will also feature a variety of accomplished guest conductors and performers.

3)   World Music Festival

Returning to Chicago on September 21st through the 27th is the 13th annual World Music Festival. Brought to you by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture, this multi-venue, eight-day music fest includes performances from musicians from all over the globe.

A wide-variety of shows will be taking place all throughout the festival, with some shows being free and other having very low-cost ticket prices. If you love hearing great tunes from all different cultures, the World Music Festival is a “can’t miss” event!

2)   Chicago Jazz Festival

Believe it or not, 2012 marks the 34th year for the annual Chicago Jazz Festival. Taking place from August 30th through September 2nd, this Labor Day tradition is among one of the best music shows in all of Chicago-land. Each free performance truly celebrates the greatness of the Jazz genre and we can’t wait to see what this year’s show will bring! Check it all out in Grant Park and Millennium Park in the Chicago Loop!

1)      Lollapalooza

Although it may be more popular than the younger generation, you can’t write a blog about Chicago music festivals without mentioning Lollapalooza. The 2012 version of Lollapalooza will take place from August 3rd through August 5th and feature over 130 artists from all music genres ranging from hip-hop to alternative and everything in between. The event, which has grown tremendously since its opening year in 2005, will also include tons of food from local vendors and fun for people of all ages. As always, enjoy all the music mania in Chicago’s Grant Park in downtown Chicago.
