Avondale is a northwest Chicago neighborhood with the perfect rectangular boundaries of Belmont Avenue to the south, Western Avenue to the east, Addison Street to the north, and Pulaski Road to the west. Both the neighboring Irving Park and Avondale were originally Chicago suburbs until the city finally annexed Jefferson Township in 1889.

Since Avondale was originally a suburb of Chicago, many single family and bungalow-style homes were built to house the larger immigrant families in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. Many of these old, traditional homes are densely packed within the streets of Avondale but most still offer typical single-family amenities such as small backyards and separate, detached garages. Like most other Chicago neighborhoods, various multi-unit condominium and apartment buildings are scattered throughout Avondale, most of which dating back to the same time period as many of the single-family homes that were built in the area. The average sales price for Avondale sits just under $200,000, making this northwest neighborhood extremely affordable and even a 3 bedroom Avondale condo can be purchased for right around $360,000.
Much of Avondale’s abandoned land and deteriorating parking lots have recently been transformed into lush, green outdoor spaces that residents can enjoy for generations to come. Perhaps Avondale’s most recognizable park is Avondale Park, a five-acre park space that acts as both an outdoor retreat and a community center with classes offered by the Park Department ranging from gymnastics to swim camps. Also in the neighborhood is the famous pub and burger joint known by nearly every Chicagoan, Kuma’s Corner. Winner of numerous local awards for “Best Burger,” this Avondale gem is packed every night with anxious patrons excited to take on the next burger concoction thought up by Kuma’s owners.
The I-90/94 expressway runs directly through the center of Avondale allowing residents very easy access to downtown Chicago as well as the suburbs surrounding the city. The Belmont Blue Line “L” stop is at the corner Belmont and Kimball Avenue which runs to both O’Hare International Airport and the Chicago Loop. The most traveled CTA bus lines in Avondale are the 82 bus, which runs north/south down Kimball Avenue, the 56 bus, which travels east/west across Belmont Avenue, and finally the 77 bus, which runs along Milwaukee Avenue.
