Wicker Park Chicago Homes & Condos
Founded in 1870 by brothers Joel and Charles Wicker, Wicker Park saw a development boom as downtown residents sought property further away from downtown after the Great Fire of 1871. Untouched by the fire, Wicker Park became a destination paradise for upwardly mobile families; the influx in to the neighborhood has yet to stop. Since the 1980s, Wicker Park began a bustling gentrification that has led to being a key attraction to the area.
The median prices for homes in Wicker Park, Chicago were for the spring of 2009, $395,000. There are many resale and new homes in Chicago on the MLS, including pre-foreclosure, auction, or bank-owned stages of the foreclosure process.
By the mid-1990s, real estate prices were on the rise, and the neighborhood began making drastic changes, pricing many residents out (including some of the artists’ who were pioneers in the neighborhood). Wicker Park now offers a variety of residential housing options: a mix of single-family homes, condominiums, two-flats, timber and concrete lofts, townhomes, and post-modern city mansions.
These high-prices have made Wicker Park homes more family-friendly than in past years. The community has enjoyed an influx of banks, chain stores, and major brand boutiques. The neighborhood has however, still managed to old-school charm: with its bakeries, independent boutiques, and record and book stores. Wicker Park annually hosts the Around the Coyote art festival to support local artists and galleries and is home to many entertainment venues.
Today, this fabulous character neighbourhood, with downtown only 2 miles away and the El tracks near the center of the neighborhood at Damen and Milwaukee, is both a recreation destination and a residential retreat. A diverse community makes Wicker Park homes highly desirable Chicago real estate.
