Streeterville Chicago History: A Look Back

One of Chicago’s most interesting neighborhoods, Streeterville residents or prospective residents may find the naming of the ‘hood a bit of a fun fact.  In 1886, a man named Captain George Wellington “Cap” Streeter who was a “jack-of-all-trades” type, purchased a boat, named it the Reutan, and sailed it on Lake Michigan during a horrible storm.  Due to these weather conditions, Cap and his wife ended up on a sandbar approximately 450 feet east of Michigan Ave.  Once the storm had passed, the couple decided to live on the sandbar, on their boat, instead of digging themselves out of the mess!  While Chicago was still in the midst of the rebuilding, post-fire phase, Cap Streeter envisioned an opportunity that he stumbled upon.  He informed some contractors that they could utilize his sandbar as a dump, for purposes of exposing of rubble and building ruins, in exchange for a small fee, and alas, the shoreline was eventually extended by 186 acres.  Since government declared only the land up to the water’s edge as part of Chicago, Streeter capitalized on this and named his land the “District of Lake Michigan”.  The opportunities seemed endless for Cap and he quickly began to sell off sections of the landfill, and eventually, a shantytown was formed.

Chicagoans were not happy about Cap’s operation and he was almost arrested multiple times by the police.  Cap was fearless and determined to keep his land.  Through witty and tricky antics he escaped the authorities time and time again.  What eventually resulted in a court battle regarding the legal rights to the District of Lake Michigan ended suddenly when Wellington passed away from pneumonia in 1921.  The city finally won the battle, and the land along the lakeshore became a rapidly growing Chicago neighborhood.  The name, Streeterville, which is thus attributed to Cap, caught on and remains the name of this area which is now lined with luxury residences, tourist attractions, and commercial offices.  The Streeterville Chicago neighborhood remains quite a contrast when compared to the landfill it once was in Cap’s day.

Streeterville Chicago Real Estate and Community

There are many distinctive neighborhoods in the Streeterville area, each with their own particular character. Streeterville real estate for sale can be categorized by the developments that have been built in different areas of the district. The East Lake Shore Drive District boasts a fabulous collection of luxury apartments from the early 1900s, if you're looking for a historical condo in Streeterville. Homes around the Old Chicago Water Tower District, on Michigan Avenue at Chicago Avenue, surround some of the only buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire.

Some of the best-known Streeterville real estate for sale is located on the Magnificent Mile part of Michigan Avenue, with architecture that dates back to the 1920s, including Beaux-arts classicism and gothic revival styles. This stretch of the avenue is a veritable shopping Mecca.

Streeterville is home to numerous sought-after condo buildings including the modernist Pearson on the Park and the distinctive Palmolive building. Another fabulous attraction in Streeterville is the John Hancock Center with its distinctive structural expressionist architecture which houses the Hancock Observatory where you can enjoy a stunning 360 degree view of the city and Lake Michigan. The building also boasts one of most spectacular dining views in the city at Signature Room at the 95th. The Wrigley Building, built in 1920 for the chewing gum mogul, is also in the Streeterville area.

Some of the attractions in Streeterville which the local residents enjoy are Navy Pier and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Navy Pier is a great place for kids and adults alike with its Ferris wheel, Children's Museum, Spirit of Chicago cruises, and plenty of great restaurants and an outdoor music pavilion.

Water Tower Place is a vertical mall on Michigan Avenue that boasts many popular shops, as well as the Ritz Carlton Hotel and 260 condos. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, is one of the largest contemporary art venues. The museum plays host to the Puck restaurant which has live jazz every Tuesday during the summer.

Streeterville Chicago Dining

Containing some of the trendiest and most memorable dining spots in the city, Streeterville restaurants will surely leave the palette satisfied.  Perhaps one of the most upscale dining experiences in the world, the Signature Room, located on the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower, boasts not only exceptional cuisine but a view too amazing to miss.  Diners typically react in awe at both the panoramic city views and the contemporary, delightful meals served within the Signature Room.  The higher-price meals can, thus, be justified by the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What trip to Chicago is a trip without a visit to Navy Pier?  Residents and visitors alike enjoy multiple dining options at the world-famous Pier which includes Billy Goat Tavern, Harry Caray’s Tavern, Bubba Gump Shrimp, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Bar and Grill, and Riva’s.  Come for the food and stay for the fun and fireworks!  Taking over the sky every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer and every Saturday following summer, the spectacular fireworks at Navy Pier shine over Chicago’s lakefront.

A typical theater buff will be pleased by Streeterville's selection of live shows.  Revisiting Navy Pier, there are two stages located within this venue: the Chicago Shakespeare Theater, which features main-stage performances of works by the Bard and productions by other playwrights in the theater's smaller upstairs space all year-round. Theater goers can also enjoy summertime performances out on the pier by visiting the Skyline Stage, which hosts the astounding talents of Cirque du Soleil-style acrobats and contortionists.

Not up for a live theater production?  Not to worry!  Standing six stories high and over 80 feet wide, Navy Pier's IMAX Theater is the largest movie screen in Streeterville, if not the entire city of Chicago. This 1950s-style cinema experience is incredible. Streeterville is home to more of a standard theater as well. The AMC River East 21 is a multi-level complex showing all the newest Hollywood blockbusters.  A note to the wise, especially on weekends:  purchase tickets in advance (this can easily be accomplished online) or be prepared to get redirected to other movie theaters – tickets sell out quick for this popular spot!
