More About South Loop Chicago Real Estate and Neighborhood
South Loop Chicago is generally defined as Congress Parkway to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, the south branch of the Chicago River to the west, and Cermak Road to the south. As in any city neighbourhood though, the boundaries are a little flexible.
South Loop real estate is dominated by new high-rise condominium buildings. The South Loop lakefront offers some of the city’s best views overlooking the Museum Campus, Soldier Field, and Lake Michigan to the east, and the downtown skyline to the north and east. There are areas of mid-rise condos, townhomes, and single-family homes away from the lake.
The South Loop has had a building boom that has created a lot of unsold properties. South Loop was also one of the many areas of downtown to get hit by investors overbuying un-built condo units. So now, more than ever, with interest rates low, prices lower, and more sellers in the South Loop than ever before, it is a great time and place to buy real estate. The South Loop has a myriad of housing options to fit the lifestyles of young adults to growing families and "empty nester" retirees.
South Loop real estate consists of mostly attached housing options: condominiums, lofts, and townhouses. A one-bedroom condo in the South Loop can start as low as $165,000 ranging to almost $400,000; a two-bedroom most often in the $250,000 range and higher. Townhomes in the area are selling for a little less than $500,000, and the rare single-family homes can reach the millions.
South Loop condos and homes are located close to ammenities like grocery stores, parks, restaurants, and entertainment. There are some great schools in the area for families with children, including Charter Schools and a college prep school. There are many big box retailers in the area, including a newly opened Whole Foods Market, Target, and Office Depot. There is also a 16-screen theatre scheduled to open in the South Loop area in the fall of 2009.
