The village of Downers Grove hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Some of the residents’ favorite pastimes include the annual Downers Grove Heritage Festival (voted the “Best Festival in the Midwest”), an annual cycling event that draws competitors from across the country as well as international ones, the annual Ice Sculpture Festival, a variety of adult and youth athletic leagues, a seasonal farmer’s market and an impromptu antique car show on Fridays in the summer.
Downers Grove is supported by the Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital which has the added benefit of bring a level I trauma centre. Fishing ponds, picnic shelters, baseball fields, lighted tennis courts, basketball and volleyball courts, jogging trails and Downers Grove golf course, a nine-hole course founded in 1892 and open to the public, represent an abbreviated list of the numerous endeavors made possible by Downers Grove’s extensive park system. Downers Grove has about 16 public schools including two middle school and two high schools, as well as Avery Coonley School, and Midwestern University. Downers Grove home owners are some of the most educated citizenry in the United States.
