Andersonville is a small, quaint portion of Chicago with a vibrant, small town feel. Its main strip of Clark Street, from Foster Avenue to the south and Bryn Mawr Avenue to the north, is packed with boutique clothing stores, classic antique shops, delicious restaurants and cafes and some of the trendiest bars in Chicago. Originally land used for farming, Andersonville quickly became a destination for immigrant farmers looking for cheap land and a place to build inexpensive housing made from wood. This practice was typically banned from the city after the Great Chicago Fire, but because of Andersonville's far north location, it remained a legal practice. Many of these same farmers had Scandinavian roots, so along with this migration came a wide variety of Swedish-oriented businesses. Today’s Andersonville still embraces its rich Scandinavian history, as its now home to the Chicago Swedish American Museum, Anne Sather’s Restaurant, several Swedish-inspired bakeries, and of course the very recognizable Swedish flag water tower.

The Andersonville Park at the corner of Ashland and Farragut is a top destination for parents and their kids as well as Mellin Playlot Park on Ashland Avenue between Bryn Mawr and Gregory Street. In addition, Chicago’s beautiful lakefront is just a short bike ride or drive away making summers in Andersonville as enjoyable as perhaps any other neighborhood in the city.

ANDERSONVILLE TRANSPORATION

The nearest CTA train line servicing Andersonville is the Red, with stops at Berwyn and Bryn Mawr Avenues. Major bus routes running through Andersonville include the 92, which runs along Foster Avenue and the 22 bus, which follows Clark Street. If choosing to drive to other parts of Chicago, Lake Shore Drive is just a short distance and can be caught from both Bryn Mawr and Foster Avenue.
